The Akira-class is a class of Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet by the early 2370s.

General Overview

Designed to supplement tactical support, the Akira-class vessel was developed as one of Starfleet's first combat-oriented starships. Initially a testbed for advanced weaponry during the Cardassian War, the Akira-class was finally commissioned in 2368 as a response to the growing Borg threat.

The Akira-class effectively combines the role of gun boat and support carrier into one starship. A dedicated weapons pod, housing multiple photon and quantum torpedo tubes, provides formidable strike capability. As a support vessel, the Akira-class has three quick-pressure shuttlebays: a heavily shielded forward bay for rapid deployment of shuttles or starfighters, and two aft bays between the catamarans for protected recovery of small craft.

Akira-class vessels distinguished themselves during the Dominion War, playing vital roles at the Battle of Chin'toka and in Operation Return. They continue to remain a key element of Starfleet's defense forces.

Technical Data

Physical Arrangement

This ship has a thru-deck hangar configuration. The arrangement of torpedo launchers is 3 forward, 2 aft in the rollbar, 2 forward above the deflector, 1 forward below the deflector, 2 each to port and starboard in the saucer. The deck listing includes the weapons pod. As such, the first four "decks" are essentially sub-decks while the ship proper begins on what would customarily be deck 5 but is, in this instance, deck 1. The sub-decks comprise the pod.
