The Guardian-class is a class of Federation orbital defense platform serving in Starfleet during the late twenty-fourth century.

General Overview

The capture of Betazed by Dominion forces in 2374 as well as the surprise attack on Earth by the Breen the following year forced Starfleet to realize many of its planetary defense networks had become quite out-dated in comparison to those of neighboring foreign powers. Years of relative safety had allowed the defenses of many of the Federation core worlds to diminish to the point they were easily overrun by enemy forces during the Dominion War. This prompted the Advanced Starship Design Bureau to put forth a directive calling for a new defense platform that would be used to defend not only the Federation core worlds, but Starfleet shipyards and design facilities as well.

Starfleet design engineers began by studying the Kimeki-class Orbital Defense Platforms encountered by the Federation Alliance at the First Battle of Chin'toka in 2374. Among the system components borrowed from the Kimeki-class platforms was the Regenerative Shielding System which provided the best defense possible given the relatively small volume of the platform itself. Engineers considered incorporating Ablative Hull Armor into the design for situations when the shields might have been rendered inoperative, but the resource cost to do so was eventually deemed too high and the design team settled instead for High Density Duranium Hull Armor. The weapon systems of the Guardian-class platforms are equally impressive. A Type X Phaser Array or Type U Pulse Phaser cannon similar to those used aboard Defiant-class and Sentinel-class starships is located at the tip of each arm. Each platform is also equipped with a pair of Rapid-Fire Torpedo Launchers and stocked with a total of two hundred torpedo warheads, one-hundred fifty photon torpedoes and fifty quantum torpedoes.

Perhaps the greatest flaw of the Kimeki-class platforms was their dependence upon an external power generator which the allied forces were able to destroy at Chin'toka by tricking the platforms into firing upon their own power source. Guardian-class platforms were designed to avoid this same flaw by incorporating two fusion generators which provide power for the weapons, sensors, and shielding systems.
