The Hastings-class is a class of Federation starship that served in Starfleet in the latter half of the twenty-fourth century.
Among the greatest losses incurred by the Federation during the Dominion War were those experienced by starfighters operating on the frontlines of combat. Nearly every engagement throughout the war witnessed heavy small craft losses against Cardassian and Dominion warships. Despite the highly effective performance of pseudo-carriers such as the Akira-class starship as combat vessels in and of themselves, it quickly became apparent to those at Starfleet Command that current starships designated as carriers were unable to support larger starfighter operations with the efficiency necessary to make them effective in combat. This eventually prompted Starfleet to petition the Starfleet Corps of Engineers for a suitable heavy carrier design based on the success of the breakthrough technology employed by the Sovereign-class starships.
The design brief for the project was a highly demanding one. Starfleet wanted a starship capable of being both an effective combat carrier as well as functioning as an integral part of the peacetime fleet. Many of the several designs submitted attempted to achieve the design brief by laying down specifications for some of the largest and most complicated starships ever seeing, easily dwarfing the Sovereign-class and Excalibur-class starships in terms of size. Only one design stood out as being roughly the same size as the Sovereign-class while boasting a more substantial compliment of starfighters, runabouts, and other embarked craft than any of its predecessors. This design eventually came to be known as the Hastings-class starship and featured an impressive array of medical facilities, giving her the ability to provide fast reaction to medical emergencies or planetary evacuations when necessary. She was also equipped with science facilities equivalent to those of a second-line explorer capable of following up upon and consoldating on the territory previously explored by front-line exploration vessels such as the Luna-class and Sovereign-class starships.
Needless to say, the design was quite popular with those at Starfleet Command and advanced development was begun. Several changes were made to the initial design throughout the development process including the removal of one warp core, thereby reducing the proposed triple-core power system to one based on a dual-core, deemed far more practical for starship operations. In addition, one of the proposed runabout designs was dropped in favor of the much older Danube-class which, despite its age, was still considered to be a highly effective class of vessel. A proposed capacity for saucer separation was deemed too complicated given the mission profile of the Hastings-class and was also dropped before the design passed into its initial prototype construction.
Construction of the prototype USS Hastings (NCC-73486) began in 2377 at the Utopia Planetia Fleet Yards. The process was not exactly an easy one despite familiarity with the closely associated Sovereign-class design. A number of revolutionary technologies including highly complex computer networks and power distribution systems necessary for the support of starfighter operations led to a slightly extended period of construction. The first Hastings-class vessel was eventually completed in mid-2379 whereupon she began her initial space trials under the watchful gaze of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. All systems performed well within expected parameters throughout the entirety of the trial period and the vessel returned to Utopia Planetia shortly afterward to be fitted with the numerous auxiliary craft in preparation for her official commissioning ceremony. The Hastings' success resulted in an allotment of eight vessels to be constructed over a five year period.
The Hastings-class starship is capable of supporting up to three squadrons of attack fighters as well as the equivalent of a squadron of support vessels (auxiliary craft such as shuttles, hoppers, transports, and runabouts). The hangar is a thru-deck configuration with an aft access between decks eight and nine on the aft section of the saucer. It runs vertically through the center of the saucer section, making up the majority of decks seven through ten, with the main bay doors opening at the bottom of deck sixteen. Because space is limited on the hangar deck, fighters are docked in "racks" along the sides of the bay. Larger hoppers, transports, and runabouts are kept in the center of the flight deck in rows allowing room for other auxiliary craft.
