The Incursion-class is a Starfleet runabout actively serving aboard Federation starships and installations during the latter half of the twenty-fourth century.
One of the features of the Sentinel class starship is the Incursion class runabout. It was designed in 2377 as an alternative design to the already successful Danube class. Although the runabout performed well in both space and atmospheric environments, Starfleet officials felt that it was a waste of resources to develop a new runabout without good reason. Their opinion changed, however, when the runabout found its niche as a test bed for a new stealth technology.
The Holo-Mimetic Camouflage (HMC) was based in part on cloaking technology. Instead of bending light around the vessel to make it invisible to sensors and dampening all emissions, the vessel projects a photon trace corresponding to the desired camouflage at that moment in time, be it an asteroid, dead space, or another type of craft, while the computer mimics any EM radiation as appropriate.
Although the technology was sound in theory, the massive power requirement was initially too much for the tiny vessel. After the ad hoc solution of adding a second warp core increased reactivity to dangerous levels, the problem was mitigated with the implementation of the Photonic-to-Synaptic Converter (PSC) for efficient image-capture, and the multitronic image processor. Through the use of the Kr'kr rendering algorithm for photon tracing and fast-PSC capture, the power requirements were brought within practical constraints in 2385 and the second warp core was removed.
Even with the limitations in place, the runabout was judged to be a very useful tool by the developers of the Sentinel class, and was incorporated into the design as soon as testing was completed. After the revisions in 2385, Starfleet put the design into regular production, allowing it to be assigned as part of the complement of starbases and ships other than the Sentinel class. Limitations do remain on the design's operational capabilities, including a limited amount of time that the shielding can be used, and the runabout having to be in a low-power mode to operate the shielding effectively.
