The NX-class was a type of United Earth starship in Starfleet service during the mid-22nd century. The class is notable for having been the first to be constructed with the warp five engine, allowing Humanity to explore beyond neighboring star systems.
The NX Project
The NX Project (also known as the NX Program) began in the late 2110s as joint project between the United Earth Space Probe Agency (UESPA) and Starfleet. A number of Earth's top scientists, researchers, and experts were called upon to research, develop, and construct Earth's first truely deep-space exploration vessel. It was hoped that starships of the NX-class would exceed those which had preceded them, thereby ushering in a new era of human space travel.
Perhaps the most significant obstacle faced by members of the NX Project was the design of contemporary warp engines which limited Earth starships to speeds of warp two or lower. Under the direction of Doctor Zefram Cochrane, the Warp Five Complex in Bozeman, Montana was officially opened in 2119 to begin working on development of a warp five engine. Doctor Henry Archer took over as Project Director following the disappearance and presumed death of Cochrane but was forced to step down a few years later due to ill health. Eventually, the specifications of the new warp five engine were tested and approved by Starfleet and the UESPA for trial runs.
Twenty years later, Starfleet had succeeded the UESPA as the leading agency for Earth's space exploration missions. It was around this time in the 2140s that Starfleet began initial test flights for the warp five engine. Early trials consisted mainly of attempts to exceed the warp two barrier before eventually conducting flights at increasingly higher warp speeds.
Construction and Early Service
Construction of the first NX-class starship began in 2146. Before his disappearance, it is rumored Zefram Cochrane requested that the first ship to be built be named Enterprise after a ship whose crew had helped make the first warp flight possible. This rationale was never actually verified by Starfleet and it was decided that the first NX-class starships would be named after manned orbiters of Earth's late twentieth-century.
Enterprise was launched from the Orbital Drydock Facility on 12 April 2151 under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer. The early launch, strongly protested by the Vulcans, occurred three weeks ahead of schedule as a direct result of the need to return the Klingon Klaang to his homeworld. Following a successful shake-down cruise, the Enterprise began a mission of exploration, diplomacy, and defense which would continue until its decomissioning in 2161.
Columbia, the second NX-class starship, was launched in late 2154 under the command of Captain Erika Hernandez. Several improvements based on lessons learned from the experiences of the Enterprise crew were incorporated in Columbia's design including enhanced hull polarization, ventral and dorsal photonic torpedo launchers, pulsed phase cannons, as well as enhanced command and control systems.
The NX-class would go on to play an important role in the Earth-Romulan Conflict of the mid twenty-second century as well as form the basis of Starfleet's deep-space exploration efforts following the war. It is estimated that a total of fifteen or sixteen starships entered service before the class was finally retired.
