These specifications reflect the Rhode Island-variant which is assumed to be the new standard for all Nova-class starships as of 2380.
The Nova-class is a class of Federation starship that served in Starfleet in the latter half of the twenty-fourth century.
Starfleet's successor to the long-lived Oberth-class surveyor, the Nova-class was first commissioned in 2368. The spaceframe itself was originally the Defiant-class 'pathfinder' prototype before that project was redefined by the looming threat of the Borg Collective. Originally designed for short-ranged, limited duration research missions, the Nova-class's advanced, integrated sensor suite would allow scientists to conduct research to a level unparalleled in Starfleet history. The Nova-class is also capable of landing on planetary surfaces like the larger Intrepid-class starships and carries a Waverider-class shuttle, an advanced atmospheric operations shuttlecraft, in the underside of its primary hull.
The disappearance of the USS Equinox NCC-72381 near the Badlands in 2370 forced Starfleet to conduct an evaluation of the entire project. It was not until much later that the Equinox was discovered in the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager, having survived in conditions far beyond its design parameters, that the true effectiveness of the design was proven. By 2380, Starfleet had begun employing a refit version of the Nova-class starship which incorporated many of the lessons learned from the starship Voyager, the Equinox, as well as many others.
This class has planetary landing capability. On the Nova Class the Waverider Shuttle docking port is referred to as Shuttlebay 1, despite the fact that the Waverider is the only craft capable of using the port.
