The Olympic-class is a class of Federation starship that has served in Starfleet throughout the late twenty-fourth century.

General Overview

The Olympic-class is the latest design in a lineage stretching back to the Daedalus-class starships of the twenty-second century. Sometimes referred to as Hospital Ships, these vessels have specific mission parameters and are commonly deployed behind the front lines during conflicts such as the Dominion War.

Starfleet began to see a rapid decline in the performance of the Hope-class medical support vessel throughout the latter twenty-fourth century. Attempted invasion by the Borg Collective as well as war with the Dominion brought to light several flaws in the aging Hope-class design including the limited shielding and armament which made it the prime target for those less apt to respect the conventions traditionally afforded to vessels engaged in humanitarian relief. So it was that Starfleet engineers began designing a suitable successor to the Hope-class which eventually entered service as the Olympic-class during the late 2370s.

While fully equipped and staffed to serve as Starfleet's premier medical support vessel, the Olympic-class was never intended for extreme long-term medical care nor was it designed for combat operations. Olympic-class starships are relatively lightly armed and their crews are made up of a large proportion of doctors, nurses, triage medics, as well as other medical technicians and specialists. In addition to wartime relief efforts, Olympic-class vessels can be utilized during major medical emergencies and sudden disease outbreaks from the innermost Federation worlds to the most distant colonies.

Many vessels of this design are named after famous physicians of varied types throughout history, both from Earth and aligned worlds of the Federation.

Physical Arrangement

Much like its predecessor, the Olympic-class features a spherical fore-section which allows for a more even distribution of medical facilities and patient care than is possible with traditional primary hull configurations. Perhaps one of the most significant starship components located within the primary hull is the primary navigational deflector which can be found within the lower half of the sphere, commonly referred to as the "Bubble".

The secondary (engineering) hull of the Olympic-class is laid out in much the same way as any traditional starship would be. It served as primary housing for most of the vessel's crew and residential medical staff as well as those areas necessary for day-to-day starship operations. Designers did replace the massive hangar of the Hope-class with a thru-deck shuttlebay capable of better supporting small medical transports and other embarked craft.
