The Photon Torpedo is a powerful, long-range weapon that has been used aboard Federation starships for over one hundred and fifty years. It is comprised of an elongated, elliptical body roughly two-hundred and ten centimeters long, seventy-six centimeters across, and forty-five meters high. The warhead itself carries a maximum load of one-and-a-half kilos of antimatter and an equal amount of regular matter. These are divided into many thousands of small pellets suspended in a magnetic field.
Also included in the torpedo are target acquisition, guidance, and detonation assemblies as well as a warp sustainer unit. If launched during warp flight, the torpedo will continue at warp until the sustainer is exhausted. A torpedo's range can be extended by reducing the warhead yield to make space for increased propulsion capacity.
Torpedoes can be set to fly a ballistic trajectory, be directed by the launch vessel, or home in via its own guidance systems. Recent advances in Federation weapons technology have allowed the standard photon torpedo to be upgraded with sophisticated targetting systems and sensor packages, giving them the ability to detect and, if required, target weakened shield areas in the heat of battle.
