History

Early Childhood

Thomas Elliot Gates was born on 15 April 2365 to Richard and Evelyn Gates who died while in labor aboard the USS Angelshark. Little is known about Gates' earliest years aside from the fact he lived what most would consider the rough childhood of a Starfleet brat. His father was a Starfleet admiral attached to the Division of Starfleet Operations which resulted in numerous visits to various Starfleet outposts and facilities across the Federation. Such frequent traveling made it difficult for Gates to get the family environment he needed to foster the sort of personal connections typically associated with Betazoid children. This led to signs of nervous, withdrawn behavior which slowly began manifesting themselves as early as two years of age.

By the time he was five years old, Gates' father had him enrolled in a boarding school near Cambridge, England on Earth thinking it might help straighten the boy out. His father could not have been more wrong. The fact Gates was not being raised and trained in his Betazoid heritage caused him to become even more isolated from his peers. As time went on, this resulted in Gates quickly becoming the target of practical jokes and bullying on the part of his fellow students, thereby perpetuating his downward spiral into greater self-doubt. It wasn't until he reached the age of twelve and his father transferred him to another program designed to feed youth into Starfleet Academy that Gates slowly began finding ways to slip out from under his father's shadow.

Despite the fact Gates still resented his father for dumping him off on the doorstep of two different boarding schools, the young Betazoid was smart enough to realized being away at school meant he could almost be his own person if he really wanted to. He started looking for ways to occupy his own time that would help keep him away from those who picked on him the worst. The study rooms were one place he could shut himself away from the outside world if only for just a few hours. On the rare occasions when he would return home for the holidays, most of the time would be spent parading around on another one of his father's duty tours. Gates would try his best to play the part of devoted son while his father met with various senior and flag officers across the Federation. Behind the mask, however, young Gates wanted nothing more than to return to school where he could at least hide himself away.

Starfleet Academy

Gates managed to keep himself afloat just enough that he was able to scrape past the Academy Entrance examinations at age seventeen. This was due in no small part to the Academy preparation program his father had enrolled him in which was designed so students could complete a majority of the basic coursework required for graduation from Starfleet Academy, thereby reducing the number of years needed to complete their training. Yet Gates still had to work extra hard to pass his first year on campus in San Francisco. Trying to stay on top of Academy coursework while dealing with developing Betazoid senses continued to make Gates' life difficult, but not nearly as much as the constant pressure from his father as well as the impression nothing he did could do would ever be good enough for the admiral. On the extremely rare occasion the two would meet in person, the admiral would not acknowledge his son at all, referring to him instead as merely another cadet. This only served to further distance the two from one another.

Toward the end of Gates' first year at the Academy he met an upperclassman by the name of Josh Briggans who was getting ready to graduate with certification in flight control. Josh offered to help tutor Gates and help him with his studies. It was the first time anyone had really taken an interest in Gates as anything other than someone to be duped for entertainment. Eventually the two started forming a close friendship, one of the few Gates had been able to experience thus far in his life. Two weeks into Gates' second year, however, he learned that Josh had been killed in a skirmish with a Tzenkethi warship. The incident made him seriously consider leaving Starfleet, but his father would not allow it.

Early Starfleet Career

Gates graduated from Starfleet Academy in early 2384 and was sent to Starbase Earhart along with a number of fellow graduates to await his first assignment. Not long after arriving at Starbase Earhart, Gates was ordered to report to the USS Challenger as the Executive Officer's Yeoman. It was this position which brought the young officer into contact with Lieutenant Commander Peter Armstrong for the first time. Armstrong welcomed Gates' assistance and made a conscious effort to befriend the young Betazoid in hopes of helping him to become more comfortable aboard ship.

Their developing friendship prompted Lieutenant Commander Armstrong to personally request that Gates allowed to accompany him when the former was reassigned to Starbase 386 as Executive Officer. Gates valued his friendship with Armstrong and did not want to risk being cut off from another close friend so soon after losing Briggans. He readily agreed to continue serving as Armstrong's yeoman and the two transferred along with several other personnel from the Challenger.

Gates found life aboard the frontier outpost designated Starbase 386 to be an experience unlike anything he could have expected. Perhaps the most noticable difference for the young Betazoid was the station's larger population which translated to the sensing of hundreds more minds than had been aboard the Galaxy-class Challenger. His limited self-training and experience helped to alleviate some of the mental pressure, but prolonged periods of exposure to large groups of people would still give Gates headaches. It was for that reason he took to observing the hustle and bustle of the Promenade from a more secluded spot on the upper level rather than amidst the throngs of visitors below.

Not long after the station had become operational, activity within the nearby Elyshan Empire began causing increased tensions along the border which Starfleet Command could no longer ignore. It soon became clear that something needed to be done before these minor skirmishes escalated into another intergalactic war. Starbase 386 was chosen to serve as host to the first Galactic Quadrant Powers Summit because of its relatively centralized location. Gates worked closely with Commander Peter Armstrong to help ensure preparations for the event continued to run as smoothly as possible. When the Excelsior-Refit-class USS Orlando went missing while escorting the Elyshan delegation to the station, Gates worked from Ops to help coordinate search-and-rescue operations.

Commander Armstrong's service aboard Starbase 386 came to an abrupt end when a family emergency forced Rear Admiral Jason Locke to return to Earth which resulted in a significant shake-up of the station's senior staff. Many of the station's personnel (including Armstrong) found themselves reassigned to various locations along the Federation frontier as the need arose. Instead of following the commander to Deep Space Five, Gates took his mentor's advice and remained behind to serve the station's new Executive Officer who would be arriving with the rest of the USS Peacekeeper crew. He was surprised and honored to find himself serving with such a seasoned veteran as Commander Arthur Richardson, PhD.

Turmoil on the Frontier

It was no secret the myriad of personnel transfers along the Federation's core-ward frontier were a result of the ever growing hostilities between the Elyshan Empire and other Alpha Quadrant Powers. Concern that another war might soon be imminent weighed heavily on the minds of those who lived and served in such close proximity to the focus of action. As Executive Officer's Yeoman, Gates was responsible for assisting in the coordination of station operations as well as both Starfleet and allied assets operating within the Aldani System. Briefings with the station's command staff became much more frequent in subsequent months and working with Commander Richardson helped the young Betazoid to develop his working relationships with those to whom he reported on a daily basis.

The latter half of 2386 brought about a great deal of upheaval throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants which threatened to drastically alter the balance of power even moreso than the Elyshan Cold War ever had. Although the Elyshans had retreated within their own borders following defeats at Starbase 386 and Starbase Gatekeeper, political unrest within the Romulan Empire continued to rise and threatened to boil over into open conflict. Growing concern at Starfleet Command and the Federation Council prompted a renewed effort to formalize many of the diplomatic ties that had been established during the Dominion War.

Just before the start of the new year, Gates accidentally discovered that Commander Richardson had been offered the position of Ambassador to North Star Colony on behalf of the Federation Diplomatic Corps. The sense of loss Gates felt at this premature revelation was tempered by unexpected news his former mentor, Commander Armstrong, had received new orders from Starfleet Command to return to Starbase 386 as Chief Strategic Operations Officer. Armstrong immediately set to work re-organizing the station's Strategic Operations department with Gates' assistance and the two of them successfully provided Captain James Lange with a better understanding of operations along the Elyshan border as well as relief operations allocated to the Romulan Empire.

Getting Into the Field

Gates was keenly aware of Commander Armstrong's growing desire for field duty as well as the commander's discrete searching for assignments which might allow him the opportunity for more direct involvement. When Commander Peter Armstrong was accepted to the position of Chief Strategic Operations Officer aboard the Sentinel-class USS Sentinel in mid-2389, Gates chose to request concurrent assignment in hopes he might take his experiences aboard Starbase 386 into the field. Together with Commander Peter Armstrong and Ensign Charles Young, Gates boarded the USS Sentinel at Deep Space Three.

Shortly afterward, the Sentinel was dispatched to the Taevon Expanse in response to an emergency distress call from a Gyrian transport believed to be carrying individuals on a religious pilgrimage. In preparing for the mission en route, both Gates and Young encountered difficulty obtaining information relevant to their assignment, owing to the fact individuals within Starfleet Intelligence seemed to be witholding it from them. Armstrong found this to be incredibly frustrating as it put him a difficult position with the Sentinel's Command Staff over willingness to divulge sensative information. The situation was eventually smoothed over just prior to when the Sentinel entered the Taevon Expanse and communication with Deep Space Three was significantly reduced.

Changing Horizons

Following their encounters in the Taevon Expanse, the crew of the USS Sentinel put in to Starbase 386 where they received assistance from engineering teams of the Aldani Shipyards in making repairs before proceeding to their previously scheduled patrol of the Federation core-ward frontier. Gates continued to assist Armstrong in advising Captain Erik Tsereteli and Command Staff of the Sentinel throughout the remainder of 2389. Early the following year, Armstrong received orders transferring him and the members of his department to the Hastings-class USS Coral Sea to serve as Interim Strategic Operations Advisor for Vice Admiral Iluvar, Eighth "Horizon" Fleet Deputy Chief-of-Staff and Operational Director of Operation Sunrise.

Armstrong and his team had only been serving in this capacity a little over one month when they became involved in events surrounding the Battle of Nashira saw a combined strike force of the Federation and her allies pitted against an expeditionary force of the Zutal Imperium. Like the Battle of Altorus four years prior, the Battle of Nashira as well as the subsequent terrorist attack on the USS Wright sent shockwaves throughout the region, drawing the attention and concern of countless governments including the Federation Council. Starfleet Command acted swiftly to formulate a response. They consulted with key personnel within the Eighth “Horizon” Fleet administration, Operation Sunrise, and the Federation Diplomatic Corps. Both Gates and Young spent a considerable amount of time and energy supporting their supervisor as he was called upon to provide direct consultation to the Eighth Fleet Command Staff as well as members of Starfleet Command regarding evolving situations along the Federation core-ward frontier.

Mid-2390 saw Armstrong appointed to command the newly commissioned Wright-class USS Wright. His selection as the vessel's first Commanding Officer, although a suprise to himself, came at the direct recommendation of Vice Admiral Iluvar. Armstrong was granted permission to select the members of his Command Staff including Gates as Strategic Operations Officer and Ensign Charles Young as Science Officer. Gates officially boarded the vessel just prior to 24 July 2390 along with Armstrong and Young shortly before she began her deployment as part of Carrier Group Eleven.

Personal Relationships

Joshua Briggans

Joshua Briggans (Deceased)

Gates first met Joshua Briggans toward the end of his first year at Starfleet Academy. Trying to stay on top of Academy coursework while dealing with developing Betazoid senses had continued to make Gates' life difficult, especially when taking into account the constant pressure from his father as well as the impression nothing he could do would ever be good enough for the admiral. Briggans could see Gates struggling to make ends meet and offered to tutor the young Betazoid.

Eventually the two started forming a close friendship, one of the few Gates had been able to experience thus far in his life. They began meeting outside of their regularly scheduled tutoring sessions for lunch, a movie, a walk along the bay, or just to hang out. It was the first time anyone had really taken an interest in Gates as anything other than someone to be duped for others' entertainment.

Briggans graduated in early 2383 and was immediately assigned to the Flight Control department aboard the USS Ashland. He and Gates continued to keep in close contact throughout the summer with Briggans calling to pass along stories from aboard the Ashland or to just see how Gates was doing. Their conversations ended abruptly just after the start of fall term but it was not until two weeks into Gates' second year the young Betazoid learned Briggans had been killed in a skirmish with a Tzenkethi warship. Though his father would not allow him to leave Starfleet over the incident, it would continue to affect the young man's interactions with others for several years to come.

Peter Armstrong

Peter Armstrong

Gates first met Peter Armstrong when the young Betazoid was assigned to serve as Executive Officer's Yeoman aboard the Galaxy-class USS Challenger in early 2384. Then-Lieutenant Commander Peter Armstrong welcomed Gates as a friend and fellow officer despite Gates having only recently graduated from Starfleet Academy. Their relationship soon developed into one of mentorship and friendship in which Armstrong always sought to treat Gates as an equal. He also made it a point to provide Gates with genuine opportunities to improve and advance his career.

Despite steadfast loyalty and admiration for the man who had essentially taken him under wing, Gates took his mentor's advice and remained aboard Starbase 386 when the latter was transferred to Deep Space Five as Chief Strategic Operations Officer in 2385. The young Betazoid kept in contact with Armstrong both personally and professionally. He was all the more surprised a year later to learn Commander Armstrong had received new orders from Starfleet Command to return to Starbase 386 as Chief Strategic Operations Officer. In fact, Gates found his working relationship with Armstrong to be just as easy and open as it had been a year prior.

Charlie Young

Charlie Young

Gates first met Charlie Young while trying to gain some insight into Starbase 386's new Executive Officer, Commander Arthur Richardson, PhD. The latter was among the personnel transferred to the station when Captain James Lange was given command in early 2386 and brought with him considerable experience working with "The Professor".

Though neither young man noticed the something which had sparked between them upon their first meeting, Gates soon found his thoughts drifting back to Young even when he wasn't around the science officer. Gates was initially unsure of how to handle the feelings and emotions he was experiencing around Young. His limited experience with close personal relationships made the young Betazoid hesitant to mention anything. He initially tried pushing his feelings aside and attempted to remain professional unaware Young was having similar feelings for him. It was Young who finally took the initiative to confide in Gates and the two of them decided to explore these feelings together.

Their relationship took a rough turn following the Second Battle of Starbase 386 when Young became increasingly frustrated with what he felt were Gates' attempts to avoid him. In reality, the added stress of the Elyshan Cold War had been taking its toll on the young Betazoid who unconsciously began retreating into his withdrawn nature. Young made several attempts to coax Gates away from his work and into a more social environment, but when it seemed his efforts were not being met with success, he suggested perhaps they needed to spend some time apart. Gates was devastated by the fact he had allowed himself to become so distant from Young that he steeled the courage to seek out professional assistance. With the help of the station's Chief Counselor and the return of Commander Peter Armstrong, Gates managed to reconnect with Young sometime in mid-2386.

Arthur Richardson

Arthur Richardson, PhD

Gates first met Commander Arthur Richardson, PhD when the latter transferred to the station with Captain James Lange and others from the USS Peacekeeper in early 2386. Despite Gates' concerted efforts to learn as much about the station's new Executive Officer before meeting the man in person, he still found himself pleasantly surprised.

Richardson's seasoned experience translated to a somewhat unconventional approach to station administration which Gates found to be quite interesting. The young Betazoid found that working with the commander helped him to better develop his working relationships with those to whom he reported on a daily basis. It didn't take Gates long to realize how Richardson's academic nature would lead so many would refer to the commander as "The Professor". Instead of telling Gates specifically where he needed to improve, Richardson would help guide his yeoman toward improvement much the same as he had guided hundreds of Starfleet cadets through their Academy experience.

It came as quite the surprise when Gates accidentally discovered Commander Richardson had been offered the position of Ambassador to North Star Colony on behalf of the Federation Diplomatic Corps. Though deeply saddened to learn of the commander's departure, this premature revelation made Gates realize just how much Richardson had done for him in their time together.
