The USS Intrepid is an Intrepid-class vessel under the command of Captain Benjamin Edwards. She currently operates as part of a specialized task force along the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Vessel History

Construction of the USS Intrepid, first of the Intrepid-class line, began at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the 2360s. As the testbed for the new Intrepid-class design frame, she was the first Federation starship to be equipped with bio-neural circuitry, a new development which was designed to replace isolinear chips and speed up computer response time. The Intrepid was also equipped with variable geometry warp nacelles, which were designed to be less harmful to space and subspace than standard warp nacelles.

Starfleet had planned to decommission the Excelsior-class USS Intrepid (NCC-38907), predecessor to the current USS Intrepid, sometime during the year 2369 in preparation for the launch of the first Intrepid-class starship. Maquis sabotage and damage sustained in an engagement with a Cardassian Galor-class warship forced the crew of the USS Intrepid (NCC-38907) to abandon ship. Due to the pre-mature destruction of their vessel, a majority of those who served aboard the late USS Intrepid were offered transfers to her successor, the USS Intrepid (NCC-74600).

The USS Intrepid (NCC-74600) launched as scheduled in late 2369 under the command of Captain Walter Emick, with Commander Benjamin Edwards serving as his executive officer. Commander Donald Kaplan, the ship’s chief engineer, regularly engaged with power conversion efficiency contests with Geordi LaForge, chief engineer of the USS Enterprise-D.

While operating near Alpha Draconis in 2370, the Intrepid encountered a previously uncharted quantum filament. Chief Flight Control Officer Lieutenant Junior Grade Veronica Stadi managed to maneuver around the filament, preventing damage and destruction. She was later transferred to the position of Chief Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Voyager. When Voyager encountered the Caretaker's displacement wave in the Badlands, Stadi was killed in the resulting turbulence as the ship was dragged into the Delta Quadrant. The disappearance of the USS Voyager in 2371 forced Starfleet engineers to take a good look at the relatively young Intrepid-class design frame. There were many who believed that the loss of Voyager had been the result of a serious design or operation flaw. Within only a few short months, the review board published their findings and certified the Intrepid-class fit for continued service.

The Dominion War

As tensions between the Federation and the newly discovered Dominion began to increase, the USS Intrepid was among hundreds of vessels that began to be diverted from purely scientific exploration to more logistical roles. Missions such as border patrol, convoy escort, supply transport, and diplomatic envoys slowly began to replace those of exploration and colonization. War eventually broke out between the Federation and the Dominion in 2373. The Intrepid would see action along the frontlines and defending Federation convoys.

In 2374, the Intrepid arrived at Betazed along with a Federation supply convoy. When the Dominion assault fleet arrived, the Intrepid was forced into action. Outnumbered and outgunned, Captain Emick refused to back down. He hoped they could hold out until the tenth fleet arrived, but it was not to be. Overwhelmed by the assault, the Intrepid suffered heavy damage. Captain Emick suffered fatal injury when a support beam collapsed. Edwards immediately assumed command and ordered the helmsman to withdraw. Remaining would have been suicide.

Granted a battlefield promotion to captain, Edwards was ordered to remain in command of the Intrepid. Following a priority repair, the Intrepid was dispatched to the Argolis Cluster to prevent the creation of a Dominion supply line that would have enabled their forces reach toward Vulcan. Along with her task group, the Intrepid was successful in disrupting Dominion operations in the region.

By the close of the Dominion War, Starfleet was impressed with the actions of the Intrepid. They made Edwards' field promotion official and assigned the Intrepid to exploration on the Federation frontier. In her first month, the Intrepid cataloged sixty different spacial anomalies. In 2379, the Intrepid was one of several starships that were assigned to Starfleet Battle Group Omega and dispatched to Sector 1045 along the Romulan Neutral Zone in the hopes of stopping and destroying Praetor Shinzon and the Reman warbird Scimitar.

The Eleventh Fleet

In late 2385, the Intrepid was brought in for an extensive refit. It was during that time that Captain Benjamin Edwards was approached by Vice Admiral Roman Sanchez with an offer to serve as his Executive Officer in the Eleventh Fleet, which patrolled the frontier between the Klingon Empire and the Tholian Assembly. Edwards agreed and was given a brevet promotion to Rear Admiral in conjunction with his new assignment. He and the Intrepid were stationed at the Eleventh Fleet’s base of operations on Cestus III for much of 2385, assisting in the establishment of the 11th Fleet and a Starfleet presence in the region.

The Romulan Situation

After only a year on Cestus III, the Intrepid was ordered by Starfleet Command to lead a small task group along the Romulan border. There were those at command who were growing increasingly concerned with the internal strife that was growing within the borders of the Romulan Empire. They felt that the presence of experienced officers in the region would help to ensure that the situation did not get out of hand. For his part, Edwards agreed that a greater Starfleet presence in the region would be beneficial to both Federation and Romulan interests. He accepted the assignment, which meant voluntarily relinquishing his brevet rank of Rear Admiral, and returned to the bridge of the Intrepid, which proceeded to her new assignment along the Romulan Neutral Zone. Their purpose would be to assist in humanitarian efforts to the Romulans, to ensure security for Federation citizens and Starfleet interests, and to promote stability in the region.
