The USS Yorktown (NCC-88288) is a Legacy-class starship comissioned in 2388 under the command of Captain Tobias Naros. She is the sixth starship to bear the name, though the six ships were not named after each other, but rather the United States Navy aircraft carrier of the mid-twentieth century and as such do not share a registry number. The ship was the second of its class to be assigned to the Eighth "Horizon" Fleet and the first Federation starship to have contact with an alien presence known only as the Legion.

Vessel History

Construction at San Francisco Fleet Yards

Starfleet Command initially requisitioned five Legacy-class starships to be constructed by three of the Federation's most prominent shipyard facilities: the Utopia Planetia Fleet Yards, the Beta Antares Fleet Yards, and the San Francisco Fleet Yards. Lieutenant Jacob Warrington, perhaps most known for his service as Chief Engineering Officer aboard the Intrepid-class USS Frontier, was chosen to oversee construction of the USS Yorktown (NCC-88288) which began taking place virtually in parallel with the USS Bismarck (NCC-96834) at the San Francisco Yards. The Bismarck's hull was laid down first on 12 March 2386 and the Yorktown's on 24 June 2386. Both ships were expected to take about eighteen months to build following much the same construction process as one another.

Construction of the Yorktown was noticably delayed when the destruction of the USS Orlando resulted in Vice Admiral Quinn Androski selecting the Bismarck as the new flagship of the Eighth "Horizon" Fleet's Task Force 42 "Guardians". The admiral received a special dispensation from the Chief of Starfleet Operations to change the vessel's name and registry to USS Orlando (NCC-10722-A) and, in light of growing unrest within the Romulan Empire, immediately ordered all available resources be directed into making the USS Orlando-A spaceworthy as soon as possible. This resulted in a majority of yard personnel being reassigned to accomodate the shorter construction schedule, leaving Warrington with little more than a skeleton team and orders to simply maintain the Yorktown's current status until the Orlando was completed.

By the time serious construction efforts on the Yorktown resumed in mid-2387, yard teams found themselves several months behind with little hope of meeting their original launch date, prompting Warrington to submit a revised construction schedule which received prompt approval from the Chief of Starfleet Operations. Warrington led his yard teams to incorporate new methods and advances learned from his own experience aboard the Frontier as well as by engineers aboard similar vessels already in the field. By late September, the USS Yorktown successfully completed her first warp stress tests under computer control and escorted by the USS Ashland. The results proved so successful they exceeded the expectations of yard supervisors and construction continued at a steady pace.

The later phases of construction proceeded without incident throughout the remainder of 2387 and into the following January as yard crews continued working to prepare for space trials now scheduled to take place in April 2388. Yorktown's space trials began at oh-six-hundred on 14 April 2388 at the Sector 001 Flight Test Range. These trials consisted of a number of tests of her handling characteristics, interior/exterior sensor capabilities, and security/tactical systems. On returning to the San Francisco Fleet Yards at about nineteen-hundred hours, the surveyor officially declared the ship spaceworthy. It was around this time that Vice Admiral Quinn Androski recommended Commander Tobias Naros be considered as a candidate for command due to Naros' extensive experience and dedicated service. Starfleet Command agreed and officially tapped Commander Naros as the most likely candidate to recieve command of the newest Legacy-class starship. Commander Naros began the process of reviewing potential candidates for senior staff positions and communicating with Lieutenant Warrington regarding the Yorktown's progress while still carrying out his duties as Executive Officer aboard the USS Orlando-A.

Commissioned & Chosen

Starfleet officially commissioned the USS Yorktown (NCC-88288) on 26 June 2388 and she set out for the Eighth "Horizon" Fleet Patrol Zone. Her initial shakedown cruise followed a carefully planned route observed by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers so as to ascertain the vessel's performance under more realistic operating conditions. The Yorktown arrived at Starbase 386 on 14 August 2388 to take on final crew and supplies whereupon Commander Tobias Naros officially assumed command of the vessel. (Enduring Legacy)

History

She was named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and the lead ship of the Yorktown class which was designed after lessons learned from operations with the large converted battlecruiser Lexington class and the smaller purpose-built Ranger. She represented the epitome of U.S. pre-war carrier design.

History

USS Yorktown (CV-10) was one of twenty-four Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War, and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Yorktown was commissioned in April 1943, and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.

She was recommissioned too late to participate in the Korean War but served for many years in the Pacific, including duty in the Vietnam War, in which she earned five battle stars. Late in her career she served as a recovery ship for the Apollo 8 space mission and was decommissioned in 1970, becoming a museum ship in 1975.

History

The USS Yorktown (NCC-1717) was a Federation Constitution-class class I/class IX heavy cruiser starship in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. In 2286, the Yorktown was along the route of the Whale Probe and was rendered powerless and with barely any life support emergency reserves. Power was (presumably) restored when the Whale Probe returned power to the Saratoga, and the rest of the vehicles disabled by it.

On stardate 2/1102, the Yorktown was ordered to be scrapped and decommissioned by Starfleet. When the ship was finally decommissioned, she was restored to her original configuration, but because her bridge was badly damaged, the original bridge of the USS Enterprise was installed instead. Following the completion of restoration work, the Yorktown was declared a museum piece, and by 2370, she was attached to Starbase 178.

History

The USS Yorktown (NCC-2033) was a Federation Excelsior-Refit-class battleship in service to Starfleet in the 24th century. As of 2357, the Yorktown was under the command of Captain Ledbetter. Lieutenant Commander William T. Riker served as his second officer from 2359 to 2361. One of Riker's crewmates on that ship was Lieutenant Teller Conlon. In 2360, the Yorktown was the first Federation starship to survey the planet Benzar and establish first contact with the Benzites.

In 2370, the Yorktown went to Starbase Deep Space Nine to pick up the survivors of the USS Odyssey following that ship's destruction by the Jem'Hadar. By 2372, the Yorktown was under the command of Captain Kentrav. Lieutenant Sean Hawk was conn officer on the Yorktown prior to his transfer to the USS Enterprise-E.

History

The USS Yorktown (NCC-90276) was a Sovereign-class heavy explorer launched in the 2370s which served to help re-establish a Federation presence in those regions that had been neglected during the Dominion War. She was damaged beyond repair while participating in the Second Battle of Starbase 386 and was eventually scuttled to prevent her from falling into Elyshan hands, a decision which was reminiscent of the fate which befell the USS Yorktown CV-5 in 1942.
